Building a Business That Begins with Listening
It has always been about listening, which I know and do best. But here I get the opportunity to be able to transform that into something special. - AB
When I started Couture Times, I wasn't trying to build a business. I wanted to preserve stories before people forgot them. I wanted to help families celebrate milestones and honour loved ones. I also wanted to bring old photographs back into conversations. What I didn't realise then was that photographs were never really the starting point.
Listening was. Every project begins the same way—not with software or design, but with a conversation.
I listen to stories that people have told a hundred times and stories that no one has ever shared. I hear the laughter and memories that catch me off guard. The emotions hide behind those pauses. Only then do I begin creating.
Over time, I realised something important: that the final film isn't what people value most.
They value feeling heard. The story is what listening allows us to see.
Success Looks Different When You're Purpose-Driven
Many businesses measure success by
Revenue
Followers
Sales
Growth
Those things matter. They allow a business to continue serving people. But purpose asks a different question.
Whose life is richer because this business exists?
That's the question I come back to.
Because every project reminds me that I'm not creating content; I'm helping preserve it. A couple might share a story at a wedding, or someone might watch it on a milestone birthday. Someone will play it years from now when they want to hear a familiar voice again.
Analytics cannot measure that kind of value.
It's measured by the time it takes to listen.
Meaning Lives in the Quiet Moments
The moments that stay with me are rarely the dramatic ones. They're ordinary. A daughter hearing her father's childhood stories for the first time. A family laughing over a photograph they had forgotten existed. A grandchild discovers they smile exactly like their grandmother. These are more than memories.
They're moments of recognition. Moments that remind us where we come from and who we belong to. I've learned that preserving stories isn't about looking back. It's about giving future generations a stronger sense of connection.
Building Intentionally
We're in a rush to move faster.
Create more.
Post more.
Scale more.
But the things that matter most in life rarely follow that equation. Trust isn't rushed. Neither is legacy. They build only one conversation at a time. I've learned that meaningful work begins with slowing down and listening before speaking. The same is true in business. Purpose isn't built through shortcuts.
It's built by showing up with care and curiosity. You need a real desire to hear someone else's story.
Why Human Stories Still Matter
Technology is changing the way we create and is redefining creativity. But no technology can replace genuine listening. It can't ask the unexpected follow-up question. It can't recognise the emotion behind a pause. It can't understand why one photograph matters more than a thousand others.
That's where the real work begins.
Because behind every photograph is a relationship. Behind every memory is a life. Behind every story is someone hoping their experiences will matter long after today. That's a responsibility.
More Than a Business
Sometimes I think about what people will remember about Couture Times years from now. I don't hope they remember the editing, the music, or the transitions. I hope they remember how they felt during the process. I hope they remember that someone took the time to listen. By sharing their story, they began to see their family and themselves in a new light.
If someone said, "I never realised how much I have achieved and how loved I am," that would mean more to me than any business achievement.
When purpose drives your business model, success isn’t about what you create. It's measured by the people who feel seen, heard, and remembered because you chose to listen.
For me, that's the legacy worth building.
Every story deserves to be heard.
Every legacy begins with listening.
